Aboriginal clinician Darryle Barnes is no stranger to attending funerals, with his father and grandfather dying in their early 50s. As he approaches the same age, it is an outcome he is driven to change.
Sheryl Giles says Darryle Barnes has managed to put a "cultural lens" on the health care he and his team are providing in the Riverland. His father died at the age of 52 and his grandfather at a similar age."I just want my community in a better position so we don't see these funerals all the time. There's heaps of grief which comes from that," he said.
"I just love my community. They are amazing, and there's not enough good news stories that come out of them. And if I can just get one person better and healthier I've done my job." For local First Nations people, the efforts of Mr Barnes and his team to expand the availability of culturally safe health services in the Riverland have not gone unnoticed.
"I can be myself in the clinics and they're run by family, for family. The service is already ahead."
