Ablatom's ABLASCAN utilizes laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to rapidly analyze the chemical composition of materials, achieving results 10 times faster than conventional methods.

It is able to identify atoms up to 10 times faster than conventional laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) microscopes, a press release said. LIBS is an optical analysis technique used to rapidly identify the chemical composition of materials, whether solid, liquid, or gas. To do this, a brief laser pulse is focused on a small fraction of the material until it turns into plasma.

Analyzing the optical emissions from the plasma, one can identify and quantify the chemical elements present inside the material. The technique is preferred since it allows sampling, excitation, and detection in a single process and can detect all periodic table elements without fail. Performing one million chemical measurements using conventional approaches can take anywhere between three to 15 hours. But Ablatom’s research and development efforts have helped shrink this down to just 15 minutes. It could only be performed with large-scale installations and by highly trained staff. The research and development team at Ablatom has put its 15 years of expertise in areas such as hardware, measurement protocols, and data processing to build a fully automated, compact, accessible, and user-friendly solution. Using ABLASCAN, an operator can now obtain a detailed qualitative and quantitative sample report, including optical images and chemical maps, in just 15 minutes, helping research laboratories and industries alike. This is achieved using proprietary algorithms developed by the Ablatom team that help identify a material’s composition with high-level accuracy. According to the company, its rapid approach can detect traces of atoms that have previously remained undetected with conventional techniques. ABLASCAN’s greatest asset is its versatility. It can be used with a wide range of materials ranging from metals to plastics, rocks to ceramics, and a variety of processes to
