A large fire that began at the SPS Technologies building on 301 Highland Avenue in Abington Township, Pennsylvania, on Monday, February 17, continued to burn two days later on Wednesday, February 19. Approximately 60 workers were present at the site when the fire ignited. Thankfully, officials confirmed that all employees were accounted for and no injuries were reported.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, authorities confirmed multiple explosions occurred within the facility. As a precautionary measure, a shelter-in-place order was issued for residents and businesses within a one-mile radius of the fire. This order, along with an evacuation recommendation, was scheduled to be lifted on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. The fire's impact extended to transportation, prompting SEPTA to suspend its Lansdale/Doylestown, West Trenton, and Warminster regional rail lines. These lines resumed normal operations on Wednesday, February 19. However, the Noble Train Station, Glenside Train Station, and Jenkintown Train Station remained closed until further notice. All schools within the Abington, Jenkintown, and Cheltenham school districts were closed on Wednesday due to the fire. During a Wednesday morning press conference, officials assured the public that air quality in the surrounding area was safe. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and local hazmat teams continued to monitor the situation closely
