Trump initiated legal action against ABC News and anchor George Stephanopoulos after Stephanopoulos repeatedly asserted during an interview on his program 'This Week' that Trump was found 'liable for rape'. A jury, however, had determined Trump liable for 'sexual abuse', a distinct legal term under New York law.
The settlement, publicly disclosed on Saturday, outlines an agreement reached to avert a costly trial. ABC News will contribute $15 million to a 'Presidential foundation and museum' established by or for Trump, echoing past endeavors by U.S. Presidents. Additionally, the network will cover $1 million in Trump's legal fees. While much of the criticism towards ABC News stems from liberal quarters appalled by the network's concessions, a former high-ranking ABC News employee criticizes Stephanopoulos' continued high salary – reportedly exceeding $15 million annually – despite what they perceive as false and defamatory statements, declining 'Good Morning America' ratings, and his unsuitability to moderate ABC's presidential debate. This former staffer urges ABC CEO Bob Iger to terminate the 'self-debasing cronyism' and sever ties with Stephanopoulos.
