Underwhelming results in Montgomery County highlight Abbott's problem attracting far-right voters

A protester stands holding a sign as she and others joined Don Huffines, who is running against Governor Greg Abbott, during a protest of Rice University about their vaccine mandates, near Rice University, Monday, Jan. 10, 2022 in Houston. As dominating as Gov. Greg Abbott’s GOP primary victory on Tuesday looked at first blush, a closer look at the results shows a nagging problem within his own party that could ultimately cost him in his race against Democratic nominee Beto O’Rourke.

The results hint at a problem other Republicans have been talking about for months. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller said there is a contingent of voters within the Republican Party who are very angry with Abbott over the way he handled the pandemic and who might just skip the race.IN-DEPTH:Despite the 56 percent vote percentage in Montgomery County, Abbott’s campaign doesn’t see it as a long-term problem.

McCarty said this week that Abbott can expect a lot more pressure coming from Republicans who backed the other candidates. Christ said he and others have been pushing Abbott to call a special session to ensure the Legislature makes that executive order a law. He said that would go a long way in thawing the frosty reception Abbott’s getting from some Republicans in Montgomery County.

Both got in the race last year, citing Abbott’s handling of the pandemic. Abbott easily weathered the attacks, winning 66 percent of the Republican Primary vote.
