Crowds of up to 100 teens would push their way through the metal fence to meet with friends before horror descended
. They arrived on foot, by bike and in taxis to meet with each other in the dingy disused building - but on the evening of August 8, the party got seriously out of hand.
This week, two years after the attack, eight teens were handed community sentences after a jury found them guilty of violent disorder. Despite the serious injuries caused by a number of weapons, the jury was unable to reach a verdict on a further charge of GBH with intent, meaning none of the gang were convicted of that offence.
As one of the gang swung a machete at his face, Tom turned away from the fearsome weapon but was struck hard to the back of his head. The force was enough to split the skin leaving the bones in his skull exposed. By this time, around 50 young people had spilled onto the street, as Tom was surrounded by the gang.
Two years after the attack, eight teens were sentenced for their roles in the violence which took place outside the paper mill in August 2021. Although convicted by a jury, each maintained they were not involved, with several saying they were nowhere near the mill on August 8. Sentencing, Judge Parry said: "All eight of you will be sentenced on the basis of being part of the group that attacked Tom Hilton. As you surrounded him and attacked him I am sure you were all involved in actively striking him or standing nearby and encouraging.
