An abandoned building is causing major safety concerns on Cleveland’s east side.
Community activists, like Katharine McDonald, have been fighting for years to get the eyesore taken care of.She has been a member of the Slavic Village Block Club for over 20 years. However, for the past two years, she has had major concerns about the former Corlett Movers Building on E 55th Street.
“I have noticed several times scrappers have been in and out of here. I see them cutting wires. We notice that they have been in and out with shopping carts down here,” says McDonald." If you look inside the building, you can see graffiti on the walls, gas cans lying around, and trash everywhere. “This is ridiculous. This has been going on since 2023. It just keeps continuing and getting worse,” says McDonald. McDonald expressed her biggest concern is for her community’s safety because you never know what exactly could be going on inside the building.“Something could happen. Somebody could get dragged in here and no one would even know about it,” says McDonald. She has even been in touch with Councilman Richard Starr about her fears. As a dedicated public servant, Councilmember Richard A. Starr is passionately committed to the safety, well-being, and quality of life of Ward 5 residents. The recent situation regarding the Corlett Movers Building on E. 55th and Truscon underscores the urgent need for robust enforcement of building codes and regulations to combat neighborhood blight and uphold the integrity of our community. Councilmember Starr has fervently called and emailed the Department of Building and Housing to take decisive action in securing the Corlett Movers Building and holding its owners accountable for their lack of responsibility. The safety and welfare of Ward 5 residents must take precedence, and all property owners must honor their duty to maintain their properties in a safe and code-compliant manner. As a member of the Cleveland City Council Ward 5, I am devoted to championing stricter policies and penalties to tackle the issue of abandoned properties, ensuring that Ward 5 remains a vibrant and cherished neighborhood for residents and businesses alike. By joining forces and addressing these challenges with determination, we can preserve the charm, character, and vitality of Ward 5 for generations to come. 19 News also reached out to the Mayor’s Office. Tyler Sinclair with the city says this property is on their radar, and they are working closely with Building and Housing to issue violations and secure the building. “We had an inspector out there within less than 24 hours, and a board-up permit issued shortly after. We contacted the contractor, who confirmed that the property is going to boarded up today,” says Sinclair.“This is a high priority for us. When you have claims of a flammable substance and non-working fire alarms systems and things of that nature. There are a lot of city departments working hand and hand on this property,” says Sinclair. The city also shared that they will make sure to hold the owner of this building accountable. If that means going to court, they will.Officer-involved shooting prompted shelter-in-place at Case Western Reserve University
