Aaliyah's full music catalogue will be available on streaming services soon
Though good news for her fans who have patiently been waiting to stream their favourite Aaliyah songs, the decision to release the catalogue is one that has allegedly caused friction between Aaliyah's uncle and her estate.
The singer's estate, run by Aaliyah LLC on behalf of her mother, Diane Haughton, and her brother, Rashad Haughton, claims the decision by Blackground Records to partner up with EMPIRE on the release of the catalogue took place without their knowledge. :"Aaliyah's estate has always been ready to share Aaliyah's musical legacy but has been met with contention and a gross lack of transparency.
He continued:"For almost 20 years, Blackground has failed to account to the estate with any regularity in accordance with her recording contracts. In addition, the estate was not made aware of the impending release of the catalog until after the deal was complete and plans were in place." A statement was also released to Aaliyah's official Instagram page, speaking out against the release of the singer's music without her estate's knowledge.
