If there was ever a time to launch a world golf tour, now is it. So says well-known golf personality Dale Hayes

His comment comes amid speculation that the PGA Tour and the European Tour may be considering an amalgamation. Hayes believes this could be a good move for world golf. The difference between his plan and the proposed Premier Golf League – which was greeted with some resistance when it was announced in January – is that his plan will centre on the tours working together, rather than a rival third party coming into the game.

And Hayes believes that, given the financial and logistical pressures the European Tour is subjected to in trying to sustain its tour across so many countries – coupled with the outbreak of Covid-19 – such a move would be practical and realistic. “These 24 events would be the biggest 24 tournaments in world golf. You’d have your Majors, World Golf Championship events and then your other tournaments that are the biggest in the game. For us, this might include a Nedbank Golf Challenge or a South African Open.

“I’d propose that the PGA Tour Europe incorporates the Sunshine Tour and our biggest summer tournaments, such as the Alfred Dunhill Championship and SA Open, if these don’t fit into the world tour. “For us in South Africa, our other summer tournaments as well as our winter schedule would fit in here.”

“Let’s be honest: the PGA Tour holds all the cards at the moment. We need to accept that. But a strong board on the world tour would prevent PGA Tour officials from calling all the shots.
