The North Dakota Health and Human Services Department has issued a warning to anyone who was near the raccoon about potential exposure to rabies.

the North Dakota Health and Human Services Department has issued a rabies warning after a woman brought a “captive raccoon” into the Maddock Bar on Sept. 6. There were no reports that anyone in the bar was bitten, but health officials still are concerned about the incident.

“Because rabies is such a serious disease with a nearly 100% fatality rate, we are making this information available to the public as a precautionary measure,” Amanda Bakken, an epidemiologist with HHS, said in a statement,Cindy Smith was working as a bartender on Sept. 6, when the woman brought the raccoon. Smith tells the Tribune there were about 10 people in the bar.

She says she told the woman to get the raccoon out of the bar, but the woman instead showed it to another customer. Smith and another customer asked the woman to leave. “We finally got her out with it and that’s all that happened,” Smith tells the Tribune. “It never left her arms one time and there was absolutely no biting.”Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
