Interior officials and senators from Colorado River states begin a three-day trip to work towards agreement on how to preserve an unprecedented amount of water from snowpack in the region.

Babbitt, who left Interior in 2001, has been critical of how the department has handled the crisis. He said President Biden should appoint a mediator to negotiate a solution among the states, something people involved with the talks say is unlikely to happen. During a news conference Monday inside a warehouse at the Orchard Mesa Irrigation District outside of Grand Junction, with therushing outside, Touton and the senators struck an upbeat note about the possibility of reaching an agreement among the states to protect the river.
