A week to remember for stylish PSL referee Akhona ‘SheRef’ Makalima
It has been a series of wins for the 30-year-old, who could potentially be announced as a referee for the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup.
Makalima, who hails from Engculu village in Ngqamakhwe in the Eastern Cape, bagged her award just a few days after Fifa nominated her as a candidate for the global championship that will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. CAF has recommended her to be part of the 55 officials nominated from more than 750 women referees who will constantly be monitored in the build up to the world spectacle. On Tuesday Makalima, who goes by the SheRef moniker, was celebrated alongside Tokyo Olympics medallists Tatjana Schoenmaker and Bianca Buitendag, who headlined a long list of winners at the awards ceremony in Johannesburg.
Schoenmaker won gold and silver medals in the 200m and 100m breaststroke, respectively, while Buitendag grabbed a silver medal in surfing. The gsport Awards have come a long way since they were founded by media personality Kass Naidoo in 2006. Since then, they have become the sports event to celebrate women sports stars.
