A week after Roe ruling, here’s the status of abortion access in states with 'trigger bans'

Abortion rights advocacy groups have successfully filed lawsuits, allowing abortions to temporarily resume

On a call Friday, Nancy Northup, president and CEO of Center for Reproductive Rights, said CRR, Planned Parenthood and the ACLU have gone to court in 11 states to preserve abortion access since Roe was overturned. Those include Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arizona, Utah, Kentucky, Idaho, West Virginia, Florida, Ohio and, as of Friday, Oklahoma.

But a state district judge announced she would hear arguments in the case on July 12, temporarily halting the ban and allowing abortion services to continue. Abortions were immediately halted in Kentucky, which had a trigger ban and a six-week ban that only permits abortion to protect people from death or serious injury. However, aAbortions up to 20 weeks were allowed to resume Friday because of the decision, but the state attorney general has already indicated an appeal. A measure to exclude abortion rights from the state’s constitution will also be on the ballot in November.

A judge signed an order Tuesday siding with Planned Parenthood affiliates and abortion providers, concluding that the ban violates the state constitution. This means abortions can continue up to 24 weeks. However, the Florida attorney general already indicated the state will appeal. The fall of Roe triggered an immediate ban on abortion in South Dakota which stands today. The ban prohibits abortion at all times unless the life of the pregnant person is in danger.
