Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has claimed Opposition Leader Peter Dutton's migration plan is 'a vibe, not a policy' as both men traded barbs over Australia's housing affordability crisis.

Anthony Albanese claims Peter Dutton 's migration plans are 'a vibe, not a policy' as the leaders trade barbs on housing crisis

Under the plan, Australia's migration intake would be slashed by a quarter to 140,000 a year, while foreign investors would be banned from buying established homes for two years in an effort to free up 100,000 properties for locals. Speaking to the ABC on Monday, Mr Albanese accused the Opposition Leader of having"no understanding" of the issue, claiming Mr Dutton was more interested in appealing to his own base than attempting to develop a long-term solution for housing affordability.

Last week, Reserve Bank Assistant Governor Economic Sarah Hunter gave a speech to the Real Estate Institute of Australia's Centennial Congress explaining there was no"quick fix" for the housing sector, noting the fundamental issue remained a lack of new supply. "Federal and state government initiatives that streamline the approvals and build process will also reduce costs, which will ultimately lift supply. But it will not be a quick fix," she said.

"There's no planning being done around infrastructure, in fact, this government took money away from infrastructure and there's nothing to provide support to first home buyers or to increase supply in the government's housing policy.
