There is no guarantee that Wednesday’s match will go ahead as Real Madrid have said that they will not get off the plane if their safety is not guaranteed. A pro-secession demonstration, set to take place near Camp Nou on Wednesday, has already been announced, but team Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu told Spanish media that the match would not be postponed again.
That, however, is like telling Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates fans that matches between the two are just “normal” games.“To make matters worse, Real’s ascendency in Spanish football came about with the signing of Argentine star Alfredo Di Stéfano, who was on the verge of signing for Barcelona, but ended up at Real Madrid under somewhat questionable circumstances.”
“Although the two are – once again – leading, they are nowhere as dominant as they were in past seasons. So, this El Clásico sees two equally flawed teams play against each other – teams that are equally low on confidence,” Hawkey explained. Real’s Karim Benzema has been in good form this season. He is currently on 11 goals for the season – one behind Messi and three ahead of Luis Suárez – and his manager, Zinedine Zidane, will be looking to the French international player to provide what’s needed in front of goals.
