Monica Roberts, a transgender activist and journalist who advocated for the livelihoods of trans and Black people, was killed in a suspected hit-and-run outside of Houston. She was 58.
Roberts founded the blog TransGriot in 2005, which reported on issues pertaining to Black trans women and other trans women of color and documented the deaths of transgender victims, many of whom were misgendered in police and media reports. In doing so, LGBT activists and community members who mourned her death said she forever shaped the way trans women — especially Black trans women — were covered and represented in media.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, in a tribute to her shared on Twitter, honored"the impact Monica has made upon our city." "Monica Roberts ... walked every hall of government with professionalism, grace, and toughness to ensure transgender individual and everyone in the LGBTQIA+ community were not forgotten nor overlooked,"
