According to the Summit on State & Local Progress Toward 100% Clean Energy and UCLA’s Luskin Center for Innovation, a 3rd of all Americans live somewhere that will use 100% green energy

... [+]The clean energy movement is getting most of its traction nowadays at the local level, where cities and states are behind the sharp spike in demand for renewable energy. And now at least a dozen states and districts and 200 cities and counties have committed to achieving 100% clean energy. and UCLA’s Luskin Center for Innovation.

“At the local level, there is bipartisan support for clean energy,” says Kelly Trumbull, project manager at the UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation, in an interview. “There is a large demand for it and it transcends political boundaries.” In California, for instance, there are more than 65 cities and counties that are already powered by 100% carbon-free electricity – and all but two of those communities are served by community choice aggregators. They authorize municipalities to buy clean energy on behalf of their residents and businesses.

In 2015, Hawaii passed the nation’s first all-green law. The other states doing the same are California, Maine, Nevada, New Mexico, New York and Washington State. Their timeframes, generally, fall between 2040 and 2050, with each having to meet interim requirements. Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. are charting the same course, with Washington D.C having the most aggressive timeline: 2032.

Meantime, 72 cities and countries are already powered fully by clean energy. They are in seven states — from Vermont to Texas and Alaska to Kansas. California has 66 of those, mainly because of its community aggregation policies. Rock Port, Missouri was first U.S. city to achieve 100% clean energy in 2008.
