I founded ClariNet, the world's first internet based business, am Chairman Emeritus of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and a fellow of the Foresight Institute. My current passion is self-driving vehicles and robots.

A recent video on X/Twitter shows a Tesla , driving with its “Full Self Driving system, entering a very long line of cars waiting to make a left turn. The Tesla decides to leave the line and scoots to the front, where it signals and gets a driver at the front to let it cut into the line.

There is a branch of math and economics called “game theory,” which studies competitive situations. Its most famous problem is known as the “prisoner’s dilemma” and it deals with situations where people can be cooperative or defect and if people cooperate, they both win, but if one cooperates and the other defects, the cooperator loses more and the defector wins more, though society is worse off.

Our roads are a situation like this. The Tesla defected and skipped the line, and the group lost even more. But once you have a fleet of vehicles working together on the road, the situation could change, because they could follow this “tit for tat” approach.
