Fading or lost memories. A look of bewilderment when you smile at your loved one and they don’t recognize you. The hopes of those moments of clarity and cognition where you can say hello and reminisce as they become shorter and more fleeting.Dementia is a progressive and torturous disease for loved ones and those affected by it. Unfortunately, according to dementia expert Erin L. Carlucci, RN, many families lose hope, believing their loved one is lost to them.

One area of focus in my practice is legacy planning. Perhaps the richest person would agree that, given the option of keeping their wealth or keeping their memories and identity, the latter would win every time; but until a cure is found, we must cope the best we can and try to not give up. Erin has started a company called I’m Still Me Dementia Care & Consulting, LLC. She trains healthcare facilities techniques to work with, help, and understand dementia, its many stages, and how to engage. She knows it can be hard to understand how dementia severely affects not only the person living with the illness, but their loved ones and caregivers as well.
