A Surprising Character Spoke the First Line of Dialogue in Peanuts' Debut Strip

It's not who you think.

The very first line of dialogue in Peanuts' debut strip was uttered by a character that many fans might not have guessed. For decades, Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Snoopy and Woodstock have starred in the strip – but when it came to the very first Peanuts comic, none of these iconic characters said a word.

Instead, Shermy speaks the franchise's first lines, as he tells Patty that "Good Ol' Charlie Brown" is walking by. When Charlie walks out of sight, Shermy is quick to change tone, telling Patty, "how I hate him.

What Happened to Shermy In Peanuts? Perhaps the most notable thing about the character of Shermy is, despite his early prominence – and the distinction of speaking the strip's first line of dialogue – he did not remain a prominent member of the Peanuts cast. In fact, his role was steadily reduced over the course of the series' first several decades.

While he would overall disappear from the comics, Shermy eventually appeared again years after the Peanuts strip concluded in 2003. His first portrayal in years arrived in 2011, with the Peanuts special Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown. From there, he began making appearances again in the world of animation, even garnering a role in the 2015 film The Peanuts Movie.
