I'm an award-winning journalist writing about the night sky and eclipses.
Can you find the so-called “ North Star ” or “ Pole Star ?” Actually called Polaris , it's one of the best-known stars in the night sky, but few people can find it despite it being visible to everyone in the northern hemisphere at all times.
Don't make the mistake of thinking that Polaris is the brightest star in the night sky. It's not. It's merely the 48th brightest. The brightest is Sirius, the “Dog Star,” which rises in November. Identify Merak and Dubhe—the two stars at the bottom of the Big Dipper. They mark the outside of its bowl. Gauge the apparent distance between the two stars.
