Orange and BrownTalk podcast discusses how Deshaun Watson's improvisational style clashed with previous system but may perfectly align with new head coach's quarterback-friendly approach.
A square peg in a round hole: Why Deshaun Watson failed under Kevin Stefanski but could thrive with Todd Monken, Browns beat reporters Mary Kay Cabot and Ashley Bastock and host Dan Labbe explored whether new head coach Todd Monken might be the key to unlocking Watson’s once-elite potential.
Watson, who’s recovering from two Achilles surgeries, was captured on video throwing with his personal quarterback coach, Quincy Avery. This development coincides with intriguing comments from Monken about his interest in working with the controversial quarterback. “Todd Monken, we now know he has stated that he’s intrigued by Deshaun Watson. He has also said that he wants to tap back into a player who was once elite and a three-time Pro Bowler, and who wouldn’t want that? He could be sitting on a gold mine right there in his own quarterback room,” Cabot said during the podcast. The conversation highlighted a critical mismatch that may have doomed Watson’s partnership with former head coach Kevin Stefanski: their playing styles simply didn’t align. Stefanski’s offense thrives with traditional pocket passers, while Watson excels when plays break down. “The reality is Deshaun was not his type. Deshaun is really good out of structure. He’s really good creating on his own. And that just never really jived with what Kevin wants to do. Maybe it would with Todd Monken,” Labbe explained. This fundamental disconnect may have been at the heart of Watson’s struggles in Cleveland. Bastock expanded on this theory: “It just felt like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole at times with what Deshaun was good at. Suddenly these pieces that were good, it’s like they just didn’t ever quite fit with Deshaun.” The podcast hosts noted that Watson’s inability to succeed wasn’t just about scheme. Injuries to himself and key offensive players, particularly along the offensive line and at skill positions, created a perfect storm of dysfunction. However, with Monken now in charge of the offense, there’s reason to believe the system could finally complement Watson’s strengths rather than expose his weaknesses. Cabot pointed out that during Watson’s limited practice time in December, sources told her “he was more talented than any quarterback out there,” adding: “Pro Bowlers hit differently. They look different when you watch them practice.” The question remains whether Watson can translate practice performance to game situations after so much time away from competitive football. However, the podcast suggested several factors could create a more favorable environment in 2026: an upgraded offensive line, improved skill positions, the return of running back Quinshon Judkins from injury and, most importantly, a coach in Monken who has experience adapting his system to various quarterback styles. While fan sentiment toward Watson remains largely negative following his off-field issues and disappointing on-field performance, the podcast highlighted the distinct difference between public perception and the organization’s internal view. The coaching staff may see potential that fans have given up on. As the Browns enter an offseason with significant decisions to make at quarterback, Watson remains the most expensive and polarizing option. Whether Monken can indeed tap into Watson’s previous Pro Bowl form could be the defining storyline of the 2026 season.
