President Joe Biden made what he called a long-overdue apology to Native peoples on Friday for a 150-year-old boarding school policy that separated Native children from their parents and forced them into boarding schools where they were stripped of their cultural heritage and often abused.

Haaland led the Interior Department’s investigation into boarding school policies that culminated with aThe report found that 18,000 American Indian, Native Alaskan, and Native Hawaiian children were taken from their parents and sent to schools that tried to assimilate them during a 150-year period that ended in 1969.During his speech, President Biden acknowledged the injustice of the policy and the trauma it caused generations.
Toward the end of his speech, Biden mentioned Rosita Worl, a noted anthropologist and President of Sealaska Heritage Institute in Juneau who wasat the White House for her contributions to Native Culture. “I think people would be just horrified to know what we went through,” she said. “The physical abuse, the emotional abuse, and, you know, just treating us like we were slaves,” Worl said. “There was the abusive punishment. And I’ve always said, if that happened today, those people would have been charged for child abuse.
