Using funds from her own pocket, one retired schoolteacher has been providing free education for children in one Indian slum for the last 13 years.

Sharma was a teacher at a government girls’ high school at the time. “I thought instead of giving them rupees, it would be better to empower them with education.” She convinced three of the children to enroll in her school, as well as to invite any of the other children from the slum to join them. She said she gained 40 new students to the high school.
