The Oakland A's have committed to slugger Ryan Rooker with a five-year, $60 million contract extension, marking a significant investment in the player's future. This deal signifies the A's continued efforts to rebuild and compete after years of minimal spending.

The Oakland A's and slugger Ryan Rooker have agreed to a five-year, $60 million contract extension, sources told ESPN. This deal continues the A's trend of significant spending this offseason, solidifying a long-term commitment to the player who has blossomed into an All-Star in his time with the team. Before joining the A's in 2023, Rooker had struggled to find consistent playing time across three different teams.

However, he flourished in Oakland, finishing as a top-10 MVP candidate last year and securing the second-largest extension in franchise history. This contract comes as the A's continue to invest heavily in their roster, already having spent $67 million this winter to acquire right-hander Luis Severino from the Tampa Bay Rays. These deals, along with Rooker's extension, push the A's payroll towards the $100 million range. The A's are required to spend at least 1½ times their revenue-sharing money to avoid a potential union grievance. This move signals a clear attempt to rebuild after years of minimal spending and disappointing results. While the A's were previously known for their success despite limited financial support, recent seasons marked by payroll cuts have led to poor performances and increased criticism towards owner John Fisher, particularly as Oakland prepares to say goodbye to the team. Rooker's contract makes him the only A's player currently under contract through their planned move to Las Vegas in 2026. The deal, first reported by The Athletic, will pay him $30 million over the first three seasons and includes a sixth-year vesting option for $22 million, with the potential to escalate by $10 million. This surpasses the previous largest extension given to star third baseman Eric Chavez, who also held the franchise record for the largest contract at $66 million until Severino's signing. Rooker's contract buys out a potential three years of free agency for the player who, just three years ago, was uncertain about the longevity of his major league career
