A record number of people crossed the U.S.-Mexico border this year, according to new stats

Migrants, many seeking asylum, gather at the border fence at Del Rio, Texas, on Tuesday, July 30, 2021. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has sent the Texas National Guard and Department of Public Safety troopers to stop the migration.Border officials encountered migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border in June 2022 more times than any other June on record, according to Customs and Border Protection, which provides statistics starting dating back to the year 2000.— meaning the U.S.

Even so, the addition of June’s border arrest numbers has caused the 2022 fiscal year to surpass every other year on record for border encounters, beating out the 1.7 million arrests record made in 2021 with three more months left in the fiscal year. June 2022 also set records for the Del Rio sector — for the first time, that part of the Texas-Mexico border had more encounters than any other area: 45,225.

Notably, the Del Rio sector was where thousands of Haitian migrants appeared and were processed in a squalid camp under the Del Río-Ciudad Acuña International Bridge last September. The sparsely populated Del Rio sector in Southwest Texas includes 245 miles along the Rio Grande River and has been an emerging crossing area, especially for migrants traveling from beyond Mexico or the Northern Triangle.

Venezuelans, Cubans, Colombians and Nicaraguans accounted for more than half of the migrant crossings in the Del Rio sector despite being just a quarter of all June migrant encounters. Venzuelans in particular appear to be mirroring the route many Haitians took in 2021
