Van Arsdale, who at that point was leading the city’s Central Labor Council, moved in too. The de facto head of the place, he ran a tight ship. Dogs weren’t allowed — they’d create too much mess. If something was broken, one of the union workers was to fix it , especially when it came to electrical issues. If there was litter, pick it up. Van Arsdale always made a point to. Still-standing signs urge residents not to walk on the grass, a rule some residents have never been particularly fond of.
Some of the kids who grew up there, unable to find affordable housing elsewhere, moved back in the ’70s to raise their own families. Others never left in the first place. People continued to hold bat mitzvah parties and baby christenings in the basement rec rooms. A resident-run nursery school opened. Parents built a playground, crafting a dragon out of used tires, and everyone descended to the streets for a Bicentennial celebration that became an annual street fair.
