After the major Li-Cycle EV facility construction project was suddenly paused on Monday, more than 200 union construction workers were left without a job.
Workers dismantle a fence outside the Li-Cycle project site after the company put a pause on the construction. Workers say they arrived at the facility Monday and saw the gates were closed and locked. They were then told to go home, as the project had been paused until further notice.
Instead of building things up, workers were tearing things down on Tuesday. They were told to devise an exit strategy within 24 hours and submit it to the owners as soon as possible. "It really is a punch in the belly to the entire construction industry," said Austin. "Everybody had this book of business they had planned on the next few months, and no doubt in my mind there’s several contractors in the area that turned down some work, possibly because they had planned on that specific project taking place."
