Gavin Williams finds himself waiting in the Cleveland bullpen for a chance to help the Guardians in the postseason.
When Gavin Williams found out he would be working out of the bullpen during the American League Division series, he knew it was time to step up his game in order to throw with baseball’s best relievers. He also realized right away that he would have to step up his knowledge of random facts and minutiae just to compete with his own teammates each night.
“I scrolled down a few pages, because I know the first few links are all gone,” Williams said. “I think I did pretty good.” Manager Stephen Vogt said Williams came out of the bullpen in a simulated game during Cleveland’s five-day layoff before Saturday’s ALDS Game 1. The team tried to match the intensity of a real game in order to see how Williams responded.
“I’m here to help try win games for the team, and whatever way I need to go and do that, that’s what I’m going to do,” Williams said. “The last time I came out of the ‘pen was in college. So, it’s not too different, but I’m here to try to help win games.”Williams went 3-10 with a 4.86 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 76 innings in the regular season.
“I picked up little things, like when everybody starts their routine out there,” he said. “And I’m trying to pick up on a few things here and there to see what they do and see what can work for me.”
