Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to be her running mate, choosing a plain speaker from the US heartland to help win over rural voters. Soon after announcing her running mate, Harris spoke with Walz at a rally in Philadelphia, a state seen as critical to their ability to beat rival Donald Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance.
The 60-year-old is a US Army National Guard veteran and has worked as a schoolteacher and football coach. He was elected to a Republican-leaning district in the US House of Representatives in 2006 and served 12 years before becoming governor. Walz has pushed a progressive agenda including free school meals, goals for tackling climate change, tax cuts for the middle class and expanded paid leave for workers. He has also long advocated for women's reproductive rights.
