Photographer Janice Chung says that her new series “Han in Town” captures the vibrant, bustling, and very much evolving New York City neighborhood of Flushing.
that displaced small business owners and longtime working-class residents, many of whom were Korean. Community leaders say the number of Korean businesses has plummeted dramatically as a result.
Chung, 29, first picked up on the change about seven years ago, following the emergence of pricey high-rise apartments and a subsequent shift in local demographics. The 2010used by the customers of surrounding Korean stores was also a turning point. “It used to be a bubble, a Korean ethnic enclave,” Chung says, adding that “Han in Town” is how longtime Korean business owners still refer to downtown Flushing.
Chung shot most of the series—which pictures nearly 25 businesses—over the last year, persevering despite barriers of language and personality .

Today the signage remains, but the lot has been unoccupied for many years.
Chon Sang Kyuong of Jimmy and Jun’s Barber walks for an hour in the mornings to the shop and walks home again in the afternoons. Now in his late 70s, Chon has no thoughts of retiring.Rim Ikhwan of Rim’s Fine Jewelry is a third-generation jeweler. The Union Street shop is known for dol banji, a traditional Korean gold ring given to babies on their first birthday.Ryu Jin Hyun, of Murray Hill’s Open Karaoke, is an excellent singer; patrons often ask him to accompany them on songs.
