A study of 56,000 Sun-like stars has revealed that stars like ours may experience powerful 'superflares' about once per century.
According to new research, the chance of a massive solar flare bringing down power grids and satellites may be higher than previously estimated.Solar flares are intense bursts of electromagnetic radiation from sunspots on the sun. They release immense energy over short periods that travel at the speed of light, impacting Earth’s upper atmosphere and ionosphere within minutes. Small solar flare s occasionally cause communications blackouts. Superflares are much rarer, higher-energy outbursts.
The findings suggest that if the sun behaves like the stars in this sample, it could produce superflares at a similar rate. However, it’s unclear how the flaring of these sun-like stars differs from the sun. This may mean that the sun will produce more superflares in the future. Either way, the likelihood of the sun producing a superflare may be higher than previously thought. The most famous substantial solar superstorm is the “Carrington Event” of Sept. 2, 1859, when astronomer Richard C.
