The International Labour Organization signed a new treaty that protects women from harassment and violence in the workplace:
A huge step has been made towards protecting women all over the world from harassment and violence in the workplace. confirmed a new Violence and Harassment Convention and corresponding Recommendation on June 21—the last day of their annual conference in GenevaThis treaty is a particular triumph for women as it defines violence and harassment as threats or practices that “aim at, result in, or are likely to result in physical, psychological, sexual or economic harm.
Though the treaty doesn’t immediately ensure all workers will be protected, it does mean that any government that signs will be bound to enforce laws that safeguard them in the future, meaning workplaces will have to create protection policies and adhere to them. It will also obligate governments to keep track of the issue and provide victim, whistleblower and witness protection services.
This comes after the #MeToo movement shed new light on the prevalence and frequency of harassment and abuse that women, in particular, suffer in the workplace which, in turn, put pressure on governments to do more to protect workers.
