This show marks the first time since the mid-1960s that so many Albert York paintings have been on the market, including Jackie O.’s Geranium in Blue Pot with Fallen Leaf and Bird.

. The works all come from the same private collection. The anonymous collector is one of York’s fanatical devotees, a select group that included Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis , Paul and Bunny Mellon , Werner and Sarah-Ann Kramarsky , Edward Gorey —people who got hooked and kept on buying his work.

This show marks the first time since the mid-1960s that so many York paintings have been on the market, including Jackie O.’s. York, who died in 2009, made very few paintings, rarely more than six in a year and most of them less than a foot square. He painted from memory, and the images manage to look real and unreal at the same time. His subjects are familiar—still lifes, landscapes, animals, and near-featureless figures —but they can also tip over into the extreme or unexpected.

York, like most very good artists, wanted his work to speak for itself. He took no part in the art world. When the curatorwanted to include him in his 1995 Whitney Biennial, he said no. Artists who knew the work loved it—Susan Rothenberg, Wayne Thiebaud, William Bailey, Robert Grosvenor. Fairfield Porter called him “the best contemporary artist in America.

Rothenberg recognized a quality in York’s paintings that was central to her own work—a raw awkwardness that grabbed the eye and didn’t let go. She said, “Each time he paints, he paints for the first time.”
