The reboot will mix a little bit of old with a little bit of new. Case in point: rising R&B singer Joyce Wrice will be singing the theme song.
On January 14, Disney announced that the Los Angeles-based musician would be singing the theme song for. In a music featurette, Kurt Farquhar, the series songwriter and composer Kurt Farquhar said the team “wanted to make a person who grew up with it feel like that’s still their song but at the same time we wanted it to feel like it's been brought into a new time.”
“We said ‘oh my gosh, she’s Penny Proud,’” executive producer Ralph Farquhar said in the featurette about Wrice. “If we were to imagine Penny Proud as a pop star that’s who she would be.” Wrice, meanwhile, knows she has big shoes to fill.
