A grant from the McCandless Foundation will enable the Museum of the North to build a pavilion for Bus 142.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Whether you know it as “Bus 142,” “the Magic Bus,” “Into the Wild Bus,” or “Stampede Trail Bus,” the 1946 International Harvester K-5 bus that sat just outside of Denali Park for many years is a particularly interesting piece of Alaskan history.
Bus 142 gained notoriety in 1993 after the publicized death of hitchhiker Christopher McCandless, who lived in the bus during the previous summer surviving off the land until he starved to death. The bus became a pilgrimage site of sorts for those seeking to attune with the wilderness. Two visitors tragically died trying to reach the bus, and many more had to be rescued, until government agencies removed the bus in June of 2020.
For example, the bus was originally brought to the Stampede Trail area as a part of efforts to improve the Alaska road systems to bring antimony from the mines in the Kantishna foothills to the Alaska Railroad.
