A new documentary by Alexis Clements asks how queer women’s spaces can survive:
chronicles Clements’ journey across the country as she visits queer women’s spaces like the WOW Café Theater in New York City and Alibis bar in Oklahoma City.
One of the biggest keys to survival, she learned, was an embrace of different perspectives. “The reason to participate in community,” Clements says, “Is not just to seek out people who are the same as me, but to care enough about the common goals in that particular community to stick it out even when things are difficult, to stay in the room when I’m uncomfortable, when I completely disagree with someone and think they’re making the wrong decision.
Nevertheless, Clements does not believe the reason so many spaces have closed is due to a lack of embracing differences. Instead, she says, gentrification and financialization are most to blame. Another explanation she offers is related to generational shifts. Bars tend to cater to young people, and what young people want changes with each generation. As such, Clements says that long lasting bars, whether straight or queer, actually tend to be pretty rare.
