A new book teaches women how to earn more ‘without hurting men’s feelings’ EqualPayDay

Leaning in to Sarah Cooper’s satirical business hacks can teach working women what not to do, and give them some eye-opening perspective on workplace culture and, on Equal Pay Day, how some managers may react to their male and female employees asking for a raise.

What’s more, 42% of working women face discrimination on the job because of their gender, according to the Pew Research Center. One-quarter of working women say they have earned less than a man who was doing the same job, while only 5% of working men say they have earned less than a female peer. So the bitter joke, one might argue, is that many women do have to play this game in order to advance their careers. “Over time, my hope is that we don’t have to,” Cooper said. “If more women stop doing these things, then it will become more normal for them not to do them.”

Cooper, who emigrated at age 3 from Jamaica to Rockville, Md., in 1980, says she carved out a “consensus-builder” role in both her home and work life. She grew up wanting to be an actress, earning a theater scholarship from the University of Maryland, but switched to an economics degree at her parents’ urging. She later earned a master’s degree in digital media from Georgia Tech in 2002.

In time, that post spawned Cooper’s first book, “100 Tricks to Appear Smart in Meetings.” She hopes to turn her newest book into a television pilot.
