Infrastructure, and energy technologies in particular, must be at the heart of any sustainable development plan. As economies grow, particularly in Asia, so too will cities, spurring the need for new infrastructure.
Socially, these priorities may include health and education statistics and access to things such as public transportation. Economically, they may include the electricity price and trends such as digitalization. And environmentally, the issues are likely to include carbon dioxide emissions, energy consumption and the ratio of renewables in the energy mix.
In other words, if a city opts to install large amounts of solar panels and wind turbines to meet its environmental priorities, it will also need to make sure there is sufficient quick-start generating capacity — such as gas turbines — to balance electricity supply when renewable generation fails to meet demand.
