Music education offers numerous ideas for creating harmonious experiences.time for many American families. From fighting crowds at airports to navigating conversations with relatives we haven’t seen since last November — some of whom may hold values and perspectives at odds with our own — the holidays can feel like a test of tolerance.

Avoiding conflict at Thanksgiving dinner can take a tremendous amount of energy. And with the torn social fabric of ourrealities, few people feel safe enough to engage in growth. So for the time being, it’s okay to aim at simply coping. As a music educator, I’ve discovered listening strategies that can lessen conflict and increase connection. These approaches, inspired by my work as a coach and as a performer, can help bring a sense of harmony to your Thanksgiving table., with uncertainty and contingency plans being the collective norm since the pandemic. No surprise, then, that we are not ready to grow, learn, or think rationally. We are just trying to survive and find comfort.
