Rumours have it that AMD may be already be working on a mobile GPU for laptops, based on its RDNA3
architecture. Specifically, we could be looking at a cut-down Navi 31 GPU, based on the Radeon RX 7900 GRE graphics cards.
As a quick primer, the Radeon RX 7900 GRE, which is short for Golden Rabbit Edition, is special edition variant of AMD’s card, that launched and is only available in the Chinese market. In comparison to the 7900 XTX and XT, the GRE variant of the card shares the compute Navi 31 compute die, but has two disabled Infinity Cache units and Navi 32-sized package.
The rumours of AMD’s alleged endeavours first appeared by reliable leakster, Golden Pig, who posted it on the Chinese video site, bilibili. Their statement is simple, saying that the “RX 7900 GRE will be crammed into a laptop”, but doesn’t state which laptop brand will be the first to take make the adoption.
Coming back to the Navi 31 mobile GPU, the details of the alleged AMD GPU is still scarce, and reports indicate that it still isn’t ready to be paraded to the world. That being said, it is, at the very least, good to see that the RDNA3 is still on track for laptop gaming.
