This article explores why Marvel Studios' decision to omit a potential romantic storyline between Bucky Barnes and Black Widow was a missed opportunity. It delves into the comic book history of their relationship, the potential for enriching the MCU's Thunderbolts project, and why adapting their romance through Bucky and Yelena's connection would be unwise.

Marvel Studios unfortunately passed on a storyline that would have significantly impacted Bucky Barnes ' future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ( MCU ). While the franchise is known for its spectacular action sequences and larger-than-life heroes, romance has often played a role in adding emotional depth to certain narratives.

Although not every romantic pairing has resonated with fans, and some highly anticipated couples remain absent from the MCU, it's disappointing that one potential romance will never get a chance to unfold. One of the MCU's most missed romantic opportunities was the brief fling between Natasha Romanoff and Bruce Banner in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Although the chemistry between Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo was undeniable, their characters' compatibility felt somewhat forced. Since then, Natasha has been allowed to flourish independently, without relying on a romantic partner. However, it would have been wonderful to see one of her comic book relationships make it onto the big screen. In the Marvel comics, Natasha and Bucky Barnes first crossed paths during their time in the Red Room. After surviving World War II alongside Steve Rogers, Bucky was captured by the Soviet Union and recruited by the KGB. He underwent experiments and physical enhancements, becoming the Winter Soldier. He was later tasked with training at the Red Room, where he met Natasha. Their relationship blossomed, but it was ultimately disrupted by the Red Room's staff. Believing each other dead, they went on separate paths. However, they reunited shortly after the 2006 Civil War event. Bucky sought to reclaim Steve's weapon after the presumed death of his best friend, and he recognized Natasha during a confrontation for the shield. They reconciled and fought side-by-side, but a Red Room assassin targeted them, tampering with Natasha's memories. She forgot her past with Bucky, and although she eventually recovered her memories, their romantic relationship was irrevocably changed. This pre-existing history between Bucky and Natasha would have significantly enriched the upcoming MCU project, Thunderbolts. The absence of Natasha, who perished in Avengers: Endgame, leaves a void, but her spirit lives on through her sister, Yelena Belova. Yelena will be joining Thunderbolts alongside Bucky, and their dynamic could have been even more compelling had Marvel adapted their comic romance. The MCU has already explored Yelena's relationship with Natasha's friends, notably her emotional encounter with Clint Barton in Hawkeye. Considering that Thunderbolts emphasizes the collaboration of these anti-heroes, a pre-existing connection between Bucky and Yelena could have added an intriguing layer. With Bucky and Natasha's romantic history, he would have already shared a complex dynamic with Yelena. Their initial interactions could have been strained, mirroring Yelena's feelings towards Clint about Bucky's perceived inaction during Natasha's death. However, they could have gradually developed understanding as Yelena realized Bucky was also affected by The Blip. They could have bonded over their shared grief and love for Natasha while navigating their professional relationship and the larger team dynamic within Thunderbolts. This would have also served as a poignant link to the original Avengers. While adapting their comic romance is still possible, perhaps through a connection between Bucky and Yelena, I sincerely hope Marvel avoids this path. Despite Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan both being adults, their age difference could make a romantic relationship feel uncomfortable. They might appear more like siblings, and I don't envision a convincing romance between them. Introducing a romance between Bucky and Yelena without the context of their shared history would feel forced and out of place for viewers unfamiliar with the comics. It's best for the MCU to move on from this storyline rather than attempt to shoehorn it in without authenticity or emotional weight
