No phones. No video screens. Manual scoreboards. Augusta National is a trip back in time.
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Late Sunday afternoon, along the pine straw lining the right side of Augusta National’s 13th fairway, a pack of patrons followed the action, unaware what was happening, who was doing what, or what the scoreboard said. “OK,” said Pat Mueller, “I think Scottie is putting for birdie.” The expert commentary came via eyes pressed onto binoculars, roughly 400 yards or so away from Augusta’s 12th green.
Four dropped shots in seven holes: 6 5 4 4 5 3 2 Twenty minutes later, as Åberg, a 24-year-old Swede, spoke to reporters, waxing poetic about the dance between Augusta and the trees — “Walking up 18, and you see those really long shadows, and it’s really cool to experience it, to see it firsthand.” — the grounds were rocked by a cheer. DeChambeau, left dead to rites, jarred a wedge from 77 yards out, salvaging a birdie from a wayward tee shot, and igniting some late-day disarray.
