A California man who threatened to bomb and shoot people at Merriam-Webster over the dictionary company’s inclusive language around gender has been sentenced to prison, prosecutors say.

The threats were driven by bias against the LGBTQ community and hatred, prosecutors and the FBI said. “I will personally go to your university and start executing tyrannical leftist students and faculty who oppress conservatives. The only good Democrat is a dead Democrat,” he wrote in that case.

The sentence imposed on Jeremy Hanson by a federal judge in Massachusetts also included 30 days of home confinement, three years of probation and mental health treatment. Hanson pleaded guilty last year to interstate transmission of threatening communications in connection with threats made to the Springfield, Massachusetts-based dictionary publisher and to the president of the University of North Texas. His defense attorney blamed his history of mental health struggles.
