A man killed himself due to his suffering after a motorbike crash. The RAF must now pay his widow
The family of a man who ended his life because of excruciating constant pain and despair following a motorbike crash was given the right to support from the Road Accident Fund in a ruling handed down by the Western Cape High Court.
Judge James Lekhuleni ruled in his widow and children's favour that he was in such pain and unable to work to support his family, that he could not make rational decisions when he ended his life, and the RAF should support the family. Judges Monde Samela and Nathan Erasmus concurred. The background to the case is that the man, whose name was redacted from the court papers, had a motorbike crash along the beachfront in Bloubergstrand in June 2014 and suffered severe injuries to the right side of his body.
