Traffic congestion was cited as one of the major reasons for the change.

The Carnival Cruise Ship 'Carnival Glory' heads out to sea in the Miami harbor entrance known as Government Cut in Miami, Florida June 2, 2018. The number of cruise ports – terminals where the massive ocean liners begin and end their voyages – line along the East Coast, from Boston all the way down to Florida.

But come the new year there will be one less dot on that map, as Carnival Cruise Line will no longer sail from Charleston, South Carolina, a popular tourist destination.Currently, the ship known as the Carnival Sunshine sails about 70 times a year from Charleston, usually to places in the Bahamas and the Caribbean. However, traffic congestion in the downtown area as the ships load and unload passengers from Union Pier was cited as one of the major reasons for the change.

Another reason is that the State Ports Authority has not been able to redevelop a warehouse where the boarding process is done into an actual terminal, due to lawsuits from conservation groups. Back in 2022, then-Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg heralded the decision as one that improve the quality of life in Charleston,“We’re grateful to the port for taking this critically important step, and we look forward to continuing to work with to make Union Pier a beautiful and vibrant part of the city of Charleston,” Tecklenburg said.

Even though Charleston will no longer be an origination or end point for cruise ships, it will be a port of call, meaning that passengers can get off the ship and explore the city.If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
