Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer photographers have been covering Jackson since he was on City Council, and because of that, there are many photos of the mayor in action throughout the years in our archives. Jackson first entered Cleveland politics when he was elected to City Council in 1989 as a councilman for Ward 5, and in 2001, he was elected as council president. In 2005, he was elected Cleveland’s 56th mayor, unseating incumbent Jane Campbell.
“For 16 years I have worked to stabilize this city, position this city for the future and to ensure all can participate in the prosperity and the quality of life we’ve created,” Jackson said during a town hall meeting in May, when he announced his retirement.
