A mother and a father loaned their daughter a whopping R540 000 to help her through an issue that popped up during her divorce and ended up losing the court battle to get it paid back.

reported that when the daughter was going through her divorce in 2018, she had asked her family to help pay an amount equal to half of the value of the home she shared with her husband, so as to buy him out.

Since the daughter neglected to pay anything back, though, the family were forced to battle it out in court. Thus, unable to prove “the existence of either a written, oral, or tacit loan agreement”, the judge ruled in favour of the daughter: …The action was dismissed with costs. According to the judgment, the father failed to prove the creation of contractual obligations and failed to prove the establishment of a contract from which rights may flow. The father also conceded during cross-examination that he and the daughter had not reached an agreement about a repayment date.
