The Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 motivated Robles to pursue a nuclear weapons free zone in Latin America. Like Robles, we all should be outraged at the existence of nuclear weapons. Alfonso Garcia Robles gave us a vision of a world free of nukes through the Treaty of Tlatelolco of 1967. This treaty prohibits nuclear weapons throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

Nuclear disarmament treaties have been stalled as diplomacy has been pushed aside in favor of modernizing nuclear forces. Treaties have either been scrapped or left to languish with no follow up. This is very alarming because the whole point of the diplomacy was to keep the ball rolling toward reducing the nukes and hopefully eliminate them.
