The 5,000-member Municipal Employees Association has endorsed underdog Heather Ferbert, while Brian Maienschein still has a much longer list of key supporters

The race to succeed San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott got more competitive this week when candidate Heather Ferbert was endorsed by the city’s largest labor union, boosting her campaign’s credibility and fundraising efforts.

This week’s endorsement by the 5,000-worker Municipal Employees Association is the most significant support received so far by Ferbert, a deputy city attorney whose work has focused on homelessness issues and eviction legislation. The move by MEA comes with several other key endorsements expected soon. They include the local carpenters union on Saturday, the Downtown Partnership on Monday and the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council on Wednesday.

Maienschein has been a Democrat only since 2019. A longtime Republican who served on the San Diego City Council before joining the Assembly, he can’t run for re-election because of term limits. “Brian Maienschein has a track record of being pro public safety and being a great legislator,” its president Jared Wilson said Thursday. “There’s no doubt he is the right choice for San Diego.”
